Back pain problems are a common ailment for many sufferers around the world. Back pain is pain felt in the back that usually originates from issues with muscles that are out of balance, from nerves, bones, joints or other areas of the spine.


The pain affects different parts of the body and the pain can be felt as neck pain, upper back pain, lower back pain or even pain in the coccyx region or buttocks. The pain can happen quite suddenly and be rather chronic, it can be constant or even intermittent, and it can be localized or spread to other areas of the body such as into the arm, hand, leg or foot.

Back pain problems are one of our most common complaints. In the U.S., acute lower back pain is the fifth most common reason for visits to the doctor. About nine out of ten adults experience back pain at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults have back pain every year.

Methods of treatment:

Heat therapy is the application of heat to the body for pain relief and may help with certain back pain problems. Heat therapy may take the form of a hot cloth, hot water, ultrasound, heating pad, spa bath, and many others. Heat therapy is commonly used for rehabilitation purposes by most practitioners and the therapeutic effects of heat include decreasing joint stiffness; reducing pain; relieving muscle spasms; reducing inflammation, and helps in the post acute phase of healing thus increasing blood flow.

Medication:

Use of medications, such as muscle relaxants or paracetamol are helpful in the short term especially for acute pain. Injection therapy, usually with cortisone, helps in cases of lower back pain although studies regarding the use of intramuscular corticosteroids found no benefit.

Massage therapy, especially from an experienced therapist, can provide short term relief with most back pain problems; while acupressure or pressure point massage may be more beneficial than Swedish massage.

Conservative Treatments:

Gentle exercises can be an effective approach to reducing the pain related to back pain problems, but should be done under supervision of a licensed health practitioner. More often than not some form of stretching and exercise is believed to be an essential component of most back treatment programs, however, studies have found that exercise is also effective for chronic back pain, but not for acute pain.

Physical therapy consisting of manipulation and exercise, including stretching and strengthening (with specific focus on the core muscle groups) can have very good results. Studies of manipulation techniques suggest that this approach has a benefit similar to other therapies.

Surgery:

Minimally invasive surgical procedures are often a solution for many symptoms and causes of back pain. These types of procedures offer many benefits over traditional spinal surgery, such as more accurate diagnoses and shorter recovery times however to most people they would be only considered as the last resort.
